General Information About Using A Digital Camera On Paranormal Investigations

There are many types of digital cameras out there, and we are not going to dictate what cameras people use on hunts (though we’ll highlight some of our choices within this lens along with other equipment we use on a regular basis). That being said, cameras must be capable of taking pictures with a degree of resolution that enables close-up review of any pictures which may contain items of interest.

Cameras should also be of a type that can be downloaded to a computer for sharing. You are going to want more than one set of eyes during the review process.

Photos should be taken on an ongoing basis during an investigation to allow study of before and after photos should an anomaly occur. This means — in plain English — take lots of photos!

If you are working in low-light situations, announce “Flash” prior to snapping the picture so team members can close their eyes for a second or two so they don’t lose their night vision. If your group is also working with a video camera, your verbal announcement will also be recorded to alert you to explainable flashes of light during review of the video portions of your ghost hunt.

Don’t limit your picture taking to a particular height or position — get ceilings, floors, doors, etc.

Are you getting the idea? Lots of photos! Even if you don’t see anything with the naked eye, many times, upon review, more may be revealed later — but only if you snap freely. Photos can always be deleted if they contain nothing of interest.

As a general rule with digital photos, more is better; and don’t limit yourself to the inside of a property. Try to cover every angle of the exterior of the building plus views of the property both looking out and looking in.

If there is a large piece of land surrounding the building, don’t forget to take pictures out there and of any outbuildings, garages and vehicles. You never know what is going to turn up.

If your camera comes with a strap, make sure it is not in front of the lens when you snap your shots. Straps, thumbs, loose long hair and/or the back of someone’s head could potentially obstruct an interesting photo, be mistaken for paranormal presence or activity, and at the least will make the photo mostly useless.

General Specs for Cameras: Minimum 10 megapixel with removable SD card for easy sharing.

Ghost Cats are a form of the paranormal that occurs quite often. More often than not, people who experience this phenomenon are people who have had a cat pass on recently. Other stories I have heard involve the cat returning at specific times of the year, like the holidays.

People even have photographs where these deceased cats show up in them in transparent form. Eyewitness accounts are too numerous to list here but the most common are cats jumping up on the bed with their former owners, laying down next to them or walking across their legs. Another common report is people reporting that these Ghost Cats brush against their legs or they hear them meowing. And yet other reports describe these cats tend to scratch at the bedclothes on their owners’ beds.

Shadow People Explained

In ancient lore, shadow people are considered to be demons summoned through black magic or similar ritual to wreak havoc on an intended victim. More modern and scientific approaches have attempted to isolate this phenomenon as nothing more than the product of optical illusions.

In addition, yet another explanation attributed to this process is the prospect of hypnagogia. Hypnagogia is a state of mind usually accompanying the process of first awakening. In any event, wherein the individual does experience this paranormal event, it should be treated as a very genuine encounter for that individual and as such ought to be respected as an actual haunting or visitation by a spiritual entity. In-other-words don’t be so quick to dismiss the experience that it leaves the individual with more questions than answers or more fear than certainty.

As a rule, shadow people are there to cause havoc, not necessarily physical harm. If physical harm does occur it’s usually the result of the individual’s reaction more so than any direct action of the shadow entity. Their presence is much like a parasite feeding off the negative energy of its host. The closer this entity can get to their host the greater the chaos it can create and feed off of.

Tom Underwood was visiting the Gettysburg Battlefield in 2001 with his family when he recorded this video at Triangular Field. It is considered by many to be perhaps the best, most compelling ghost video ever recorded. It appears to show semi-transparent figures walking through the woods. They seem to be walking uphill, even though the land there is currently flat. It has been noted that the actions of the figures seem to repeat themselves, indicating that this may be a residual haunting — a kind of recording on the environment. Some think the figures look like soldiers in gray Confederate uniforms.

Review

I was a fan of A Haunting when it ran on the Discovery channel and I was very sad to see them cancel this show. A Haunting was produced by New Dominion Pictures, who did the FBI Files and the New Detectives series that also ran on Discovery. For those who are not familiar with the show, A Haunting covers real life experiences of encounters with the paranormal. Interviews with people who experienced the paranormal activity are included. Some appear in shadow and the show is augmented by reenactments of their stories. What sets this show apart from others is the high quality production values and interview with both the individuals and the paranormal investigators who assisted them and shed light into their craft. The various methods of scientific study and differing types of hauntings, demons, phantoms and etc. are fascinating. This show is scary, (scarier than many horror movies, it was so well produced) there is no gore, but the atmosphere is extremely creepy. If you watch some of these episodes late at night, they can give people bad dreams, as seveal of my coworkers will attest. It is so well done, that the actors simply blend into the roles. There are four seasons in this set.
